Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup (Swatches and Review)

Since I got this highly rave Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup foundation last week at Rite Aid (my haul here), I've been using it for a full week now. I thought I'd share my thoughts and comparison swatches here. Although this is my first time using drugstore foundation, I must say I'm pretty pleased with this one (staying power, coverage, etc.). Keep reading to find out why :)

Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup in 200 Sand Beige
0.8 Fl. Oz./23.7 ml

It comes with a clear plastic seal to prevent people dipping their germy fingers for color swatches at the stores. (I got mine at Rite Aid, and they didn't have testers for people to try for color matches etc., and I think it's the same in most of the stores in the US)

This creme makeup foundation comes in a heavy and thick glass jar container with a black plastic cap. I personally don't like the jar pkg for sanitary reason as it can cause bacteria buildup and it's pretty heavy which is not travel-friendly. Not sure why they did this, however, it looks fancy and feels fancy in your hand and makeup counter/vanity. With this heavy container, it actually only has 0.8 fl. oz/23.7 ml which is less than the usual 1.0 oz/30 ml we've seen in most foundation brands...

It claims to have 24 hours wear (see below magazine ads) which I think is too exaggerated, but I must say, on my skin (I have dry skin), it's very long wear, without any touch-ups throughout the day, this creme foundation stays nice for at least 9 hours!

When I was in the store, I had a difficult time picking up the right shade as I mentioned earlier, the container of this jar is so thick, it's very hard to see the true color from outside and I felt every jar looked pretty much the same after a while +_+ I was deciding between 200 Sand Beige and 220 Nude, but I can tell that 220 Nude looked a bit more pink tone so I went with Sand Beige.

When opened, there's a white plastic cover on top of the creme foundation so the product won't exposed to the air right away... (again I don't like the design, I always have to use a clean Q-tip (aka cotton swab ha ha) to get the product I need. I prefer pump or squeeze tube)

The consistency is thicker than liquid, yet thinner than heavier cream foundation, think about milkshake or pudding! It's not as "whipped" as I expected. If you position this jar to an angle like 45 degree, the product could slowly running out of the jar!

Now move on to swatches...
I compared/swatched it with my other 2 current foundations...

Before I got the Revlon one, Make Up For Ever (MUFE) Mat Velvet+ is my favorite! I always like to use it together with a bit of Estee Lauder's Double Wear Light for my skin tone. For reference, I am MAC NC20, MUFE Mat Velvet+ No.30, Estee Lauder Double Wear Light intensity 1.7/1.8 - 2.0 is slightly darker on me. I love MUFE Mat Velvet+'s great coverage and staying power, but until now, Revlon's Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup is pretty comparable with great staying power, oil control (though I have dry skin XD but it should work great on normal to oil skin ladies!)

Slightly blended into my bare arm. you can see here the Revlon shade is between Make Up For Ever and Estee Lauder. I felt lucky picking this shade^^ ha ha It matches my skin tone pretty much perfectly! (note my arm is lighter than my face)

Blendability and Finish:
This Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Makeup is very easy and smooth to blend on the face. Compared to MUFE Mat Velvet+, you'll have sufficient time to blend as it doesn't set as quickly as MUFE Mat Velvet+. It gives a very natural looking finish somewhere between dewy and matte, but more on the matte side. It's not as matte as MUFE Mat Velvet+, but definitely not as dewy as Estee Lauder's Double Wear Light or Lancome Tient Miracle (I finished up the Lancome one, but you can see my swatch here

Coverage:
Coverage is pretty great, it really did a great job evening out skin tone/redness etc. I'd say it's medium coverage or medium slightly toward full coverage. In other words, it's buildable to full coverage! As I use the Revlon creme foundation, I didn't feel the need to use concealer. I only need a tiny bit for the whole face to even out the skin tone, and layer more on some problem areas like dark circles or hyperpigmentations from acne.

**Note: for darker/severer acne scars, sun spots, dark circles or hyperpigmentations, you still need concealer to cover up these imperfections as they will still show through!

Staying Power:
Staying power is wonderful, very long lasting!!! The first time I had this on, and after 7+ hours before I remove my makeup, I noticed that it's still as fresh as if I just put my makeup on! (for reference: I live in a 70-85 degree Fahrenheit, not too humid area/I have dry and sensitive skin and even drier in the winter time/I always use  foundation/makeup primer before applying foundation) The longest time I had this foundation on was about 10+ hours, it faded a bit, but not much! The oil control is great, I'm sure it will suit normal-oily skin girls pretty well and it's great for summer as well when you're always on the go and need less touch-up times throughout the day!

Overall:
I'm pretty pleased with this creme foundation. It didn't break me out or irritate my sensitive skin. It's fragrance free! Very easy and smooth to blend with the buildable medium coverage to my preference! Although it doesn't have SPF, I'm ok with it as my favorite Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet+ doesn't contain SPF either. This retail for $13.99 (maybe couple dollars cheaper in Walmart/Target) I think it's quite expensive for drugstore foundation, but I got for 40% off at Rite Aid. I also spotted $2 off coupon on coupons.com (gave you a total of $7 after tax! great deal!) for this creme makeup and I got 2 more of this for my sisters! So check around and see if you can get a great deal for it! It worth a try!

  3. Great review! You hit all the high points for me.

First, the finish of this is incredible--looks like normal skin. I'm fairly oily and have never really liked many foundations as they all looked "too matte" and unnatural. This one looks like skin and actually controls oil better than all those "too matte" foundations! I was able to go about 2-3 hours longer than I normally could before I felt I had to blot.

Second, it's darned near impossible to choose a shade with this sort of packaging. I made my best guess in the store and guessed two shades too dark and way too pink--but they really do all look nearly identical in the jar and the store lighting. After doing some research online, I figured out the shade I should have purchased and exchanged it. The young lady at the counter was one I have seen frequently in the makeup section so I showed her that these products are generally 2 shades darker than they appear in the jar and she actually gasped when she saw the difference.

They dry down slightly darker than they look when first applied, too. I initially thought my second attempt at a shade selection was too light, but about 3 minutes later, I realized I had gotten it exactly right as it dried darker. Looking at swatches online can mislead you--the swatches need to be blended out and fully dry to be of any help at all.

I find this foundation to be really easy to blend for a long-wearing foundation, and I do not feel any need to set it with a powder even though I'm fairly oily.

I apply it with fingers and get a solid medium coverage with a very natural finish. I just can't get over how this looks like real skin. It's "not quite matte". No shimmer or sparkle at all, and it's not "dewy", but it's not matte either. It's just natural.

No SPF, which I prefer as there is no issue with photographs or appearing ashy /grey in different lighting.

I'm pretty much in love with this foundation and get 13+ hours of wear with it on my oily skin with a primer.

I've seen some reviews mention a scent to it, but I honestly have not noticed a scent at all.

As it does so well with oily skin types, I have to wonder if dry skins might have issues with it. It's heavily silicone based, so folks who have problems with silicone would need to avoid it. Also has salicylic acid, though apparently in small amounts, but that can also be drying or irritating to dryer skintypes.

  4. Great review :)

Which would you rather use day to day basis, the mat velvet or the loreal whipped?

I would love to have a quick response because my sephora $15 gift card ends tomorrow, and I'm debating on whether to splurge on the mat velvet. Thanks though
